Brown Monochromatic Still Life

Oil paint on canvas

16” x 20”

2022

As an assignment in my sophomore year art class, students had to bring in five brown items each and create a still life. This was my first time ever using oil paint, and I quickly discovered how much it can exemplify dramatic lighting. I learned so much about its buttery texture and ability to show contrast between rich lights and darks, even with the challenge of the items being monochromatic. One of my favorite details in this piece is the light pattern on the flower petals, which connects to my ongoing admiration of nature.
